Masahiro Kuwana, who began his professional career at the age of 16, has a younger sister—Haruko Kuwana, born in Osaka in 1956, and today happens to be her birthday. The album I’ve picked out is her third solo work, “Hot Line,” released in 1980 under the name Naniwa no Staff (Baker’s Shop) with Haruko. This was her second project with Baker’s Shop, following her previous album “Show Me Your Smile,” and their teamwork and sense of unity are even tighter this time around. Sound-wise, the album leans heavily into the AOR style that dominated the era. It opens with “I’ll Be There,” whose chorus unmistakably references the Four Tops’ “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” Other standout tracks include “Don’t Look Back” (A2), which quotes Boz Scaggs’ “JoJo”; “Game” (B1), marked by its memorable keyboard riff; “Somewhere in the Night (Yoru no Doko ni)” (B2), featuring guitarist Tatsuya Funaoka—who duetted with her on the previous album—taking the lead vocals; and the mellow acoustic tune “After the Storm” (B3).

The Blackbyrds, the group formed under the guidance of Donald Byrd, left behind seven original albums, all of which are essential listening. Among them, however, the crown jewel is widely considered to be their 1974 sophomore release, Flying Start. Why “Flying”? The chaotic cover art—hardly something that suggests a classic album and almost guaranteed to hurt sales—doesn’t provide much of a clue. But the bottom line is: this one’s a masterpiece. While their debut was produced by Sky High, this time Donald Byrd himself took the reins. With the exception of the closing track “Spaced Out” (written by Byrd), the album features all-original compositions by the band members. Highlights include: “I Need You”, a breezy jazz-funk tune with drummer Keith Killgo taking the vocals—purely delightful. Byrd’s own “The Baby” (A2), drenched in blaxploitation vibes, complete with Barney Perry’s scorching guitar—Curtis Mayfield could’ve easily sung this. The synth-driven “Love Is Love” (A3), written by Killgo, a track that feels quintessentially Blackbyrds. The infectious “Blackbyrds’ Theme” (A4), beloved as a sampling source and even covered by Osaka’s 100% pure funk outfit Fabulous Vibrations (though they’ve been quiet in recent years). The LOFT classic “Walking in Rhythm” (B1), known far beyond jazz and rare groove circles, and later covered by Joe McBride and Shy Guy. The exquisite mellow gem “April Showers” (B3), featuring the soulful vocals of Keith Barbour. A flawless collection with not a single weak track—this is ground zero for rare groove. JAZZ FUNK「I Need You」がもうご機嫌。

Having passed NHK’s light music audition in 1968, she made her debut as a singer. She then joined the GS group The White Kicks, formed around Keitaro Miho and Akira Terao, as a vocalist, later working as a backing and featured singer with Masayoshi Takanaka and Sadistics. She eventually changed her stage name to Harumi Ozora and became well known for her vocal contributions to Naoya Matsuoka’s works. A highly skilled singer, Tantan released her third album in 1978, Trying to Get to You. The project seems to have been conceived with the idea of letting a female singer perform the then-burgeoning Adult Oriented Rock (AOR) style, and she was the one chosen for the role. With heavyweight songwriter/producer David Wolfert at the helm, the sessions featured top LA musicians such as Steve Lukather (guitar), Ed Greene (drums), Lenny Castro (percussion), and Jai Winding (keys). The album was recorded locally in the US with all-English lyrics. Not only does her singing hold its own against these first-class musicians, but the impeccable, connoisseur-level song selection also raises this record to the status of a highly regarded City Pop–AOR masterpiece. The opening track “Daybreak”—a ballad that showcased Cheryl Lynn’s tremendous vocal range and power—becomes a refreshingly unpretentious, down-to-earth cover in her hands. Next comes “You Stepped Into My Life”, a Bee Gees disco classic also covered by Melba Moore, which she delivers so naturally it almost feels like it was hers from the beginning. Track A3, “Better Days” (written by Carole Bayer Sager and recorded by Melissa Manchester), keeps fairly close to the original arrangement, but once you’ve heard her uniquely intense, idiosyncratic vocal—like a slightly more dramatic Yasuko Agawa—it’s hard to go back to the original (at least for me). The mellow yet groovy “Bring Me Your Broken Heart” is another standout, while her take on Karla Bonoff’s “Isn’t It Always Love” (later covered by Mariya Takeuchi on University Street) is excellent. The title track by Eugene Record even surpasses the original, arguably becoming a true world standard. The tracklist flows beautifully, and her individuality elevates the album beyond the confines of its concept into a fully realized AOR classic—a true masterpiece.

A devout member of the Bobo Ashanti sect, Sizzla has often been criticized for his lyrics, which, due to his religious beliefs, are critical of homosexuality and sometimes interpreted as inciting violence against the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, several of his performances were canceled following protests by LGBTQ+ organizations—his 2004 UK concert, 2007 Canada concert, 2008 Spain concert, and 2009 Germany concert were all called off. Sizzla played a key role in the Rasta Renaissance within conscious reggae. He rose to prominence with his 1997 second album "Black Woman & Child", released under Digital B, and has since maintained his status as a dancehall icon, releasing over 70 albums and countless singles. This is a 2008 7-inch release from Bombist, an official label of Bost & Bim, the dancehall reggae production duo consisting of Matthieu Bost and Jérémie "Bim" Dessus. Over the Soprano Riddim, named for its distinctive soprano sax melody, Sizzla flows effortlessly like a fish in water, making for an exquisite dancehall tune!
