Following his previous album Flame, and once again self-produced, Ronnie Laws’ fifth album “Every Generation” arrived in 1980. With the exception of B3 “Thoughts & Memories,” the entire tracklist consists of Ronnie’s original compositions. The album opens with “Young Child,” famously sampled on Paul Johnson’s “The Way He Plays (Dub)” and Meyhem Lauren’s “Bonus Round.” The A-side highlight is surely the title track “Every Generation,” featuring the harp of Dorothy Ashby—highly sought after as a sampling source as well. A4 “Tomorrow” blends Crusaders-style songwriting with tastefully arranged female vocals, while B1 “O.T.B.A. Law (Outta Be A Law)” is a funky dancer sampled by Vektroid feat. Betamaxx on “Featherskull.” There’s no flashiness here, but the mellow B3 mentioned above and the cohesive, conceptual flow of the album make this a thoroughly rewarding listen.

The jacket art somehow makes you wonder whether she’s giving an upward glance or not, but anyway—this is Cheryl Lynn’s fourth album, “Instant Love,” released in 1982. After debuting with an album produced by David & Marty Paich, she went on—knowingly or not—to ride the wave of up-and-coming producers like a top-class surfer catching the perfect swell, working with Barry Blue, Ray Parker Jr., Luther Vandross, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and achieving great success. For this album, Luther Vandross took charge of both production and arrangements. With the producer change, most of the musicians were switched out as well. The only player carried over from the previous album was bassist Marcus Miller. This time she’s backed by a lineup of elite talents: young rising-star drummer Yogi Horton, Steve Ferrone, Nat Adderley Jr. on keys, Paulinho da Costa on percussion, and more. The opening title track and A2 “Sleep Walkin’” were written by Luther and Marcus Miller. Track A3, “Day After Day,” features a flute intro reminiscent of Yuji Ohno, developing into a refined ballad that Cheryl sings with heartfelt emotion. A4 “Look Before You Leap” was composed by guitarist Michael Sembello. B1 “Say You’ll Be Mine” is a mid-tempo dancer that feels like a prototype for the Mary Jane Girls’ “All Night Long.” B3 “Believe in Me,” with lyrics by Cheryl, is for me the most sophisticated track on the album, and was later sampled on Afta-1’s “Believe” and L’Orange’s “Stop Growing.” And finally, the album closes with a duet cover of the Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell classic, performed with Luther Vandross—released as a single, it climbed high on the charts. From start to finish, it’s a fantastic record where you can fully take in Cheryl Lynn’s expressive and dynamic vocals!

Just three months after their debut album “Lucky Summer Lady,” the band released their second album, “Midnight Lover.” Naturally, the lineup remained unchanged, but what did change was their approach. Whether inspired by the legendary “Gentle Thoughts,” a record that influenced virtually every Japanese jazz musician of the era, or simply eager to display their own abilities, they adopted direct cutting for this album’s initial pressings. (This method skips recording to the master tape: the performance and mix are captured in real time and cut directly onto the lacquer disk. Essentially a one-take process — higher fidelity, but almost no room to fix mistakes.) Whereas the debut album had a summer theme that carried a somewhat buoyant, Takahashi-esque feel, this follow-up — though again consisting of just six tracks — is made up entirely of original compositions and presents a noticeably deeper, more mature tone. The album opens with “Lickin’ It,” evoking shades of Stanley Clarke and the Brothers Johnson while still asserting their own originality. A2 “Wrapped Around Your Soul” continues the stylistic direction of the previous album but with an added layer of sophistication. Then there’s the surprising B1 “Take The Long Road,” the only track composed by Junko Miyagi — an explosive cut that begins with a cowbell and erupts into blazing fast drums and tense, irregular bass lines, followed by a cascade of technical performances from each member. The title track B2, highlighted by Miyagi’s acoustic piano, further deepens the album’s refined atmosphere. In just three months, they achieved remarkable artistic growth — a true, definitive second album in every sense.

“Rocks, Pebbles and Sand,” released in 1980, marked Stanley Clarke’s first album for Epic Records. While his previous double LP, “I Wanna Play For You,” featured a different lineup of musicians for each track, this album introduced a fresh, consistent band: Simon Phillips (drums), Charles Johnson (guitar), and Steve Bach (keyboards). On the suite “The Story of a Man and a Woman” (B3), Clarke featured vocalist Marcy Levy, exploring the theme of men and women. Clarke’s longtime collaborator Chick Corea also makes appearances on “She Thought I Was Stanley Clarke” (the first part of the suite) and A4 “Underestimation.” The album includes several standout tracks — the Hendrix-inspired rock tune “Danger Street,” the soulful ballad “You / Me Together” highlighting Marcy’s vocals, and “We Supply,” written by Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson and later sampled in Frank Hatchett’s “We Supply.” A dynamic and richly textured record that bridges rock, jazz, and funk with Clarke’s signature virtuosic bass playing. その組曲の第一章「She Thought I Was Stanley Clarke」とA4「Underestimation」では盟友チック・コリアが参加しています。
