A title from Concord Picante. To begin with, “Picante” means “spicy” in Spanish, and it refers to Concord Records’ Latin / Brazilian line.
This album marks its first appearance on the blog: percussionist Poncho Sanchez’s sixth album, released in 1988, titled Fuerte. The opening title track is written by the band’s pianist Charlie Otwell. “Fuerte” means “strong” in Spanish, yet the impression the song gives is remarkably cool and laid-back.
It’s extremely easy to listen to, even for Latin beginners, and a very pleasant, ear-friendly tune. A2 “Baila Mi Gente” is composed by Sanchez himself. The song originally appeared on his debut album Poncho, though the take here is slightly different. A3 “It Could Happen To You” was written by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen for the 1944 film And the Angels Sing. It later became widely known after Jo Stafford recorded a hit version, and it is a well-known standard thanks to classic performances by Miles Davis and Bud Powell. On this album, it’s given a strongly Latin-leaning yet catchy arrangement. A4 “No Llores, Mi Corazón” and A5 “Ixtapa” are written by band member Kenny Goldberg, the tenor sax and flute player. These are among my personal favorites on the record. Flip the record over. B1 “Co Co My My” is a vocal tune written by someone named E. Servia, but unfortunately I can’t figure out who the singer is (orz). B2 “Siempre Te Amaré” and B3 “Alafia” are once again Otwell compositions. B2 is a relaxed, mellow ballad led by the trumpet, while B3 may well be the highlight of the album. The closing track is a cover of Clifford Brown’s “Daahoud.” A Latin-flavored “Daahoud” has its own special charm. In short, not a single throwaway track—this is a highly recommended Latin jazz album, strongly pushed from our end!

Herbie Hancock’s 12th studio album, and one of the defining works of his electric period, the 1973 release Head Hunters.
It became his first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart, and also his first to break into the Top 20 of the Billboard 200, marking a major commercial success. Among the many masterpieces Hancock has produced over more than a quarter century at the forefront of music, this record is widely regarded as easily one of his top five, both in name and in substance.
The album was produced by Hancock himself together with David Rubinson, the go-to producer for his work at the time. The musicians are Harvey Mason, Paul Jackson, Bennie Maupin, and Bill Summers—the very lineup that would later take the album’s title and adopt “The Headhunters” as their group name. The record consists of four tracks totaling 41 minutes and 28 seconds: three original compositions written by the members themselves, plus a newly recorded version of “Watermelon Man,” originally featured on Hancock’s debut album Takin’ Off, where it had been a hit.
The two tracks on Side A are especially famous as sampling sources. The opening track needs no introduction: it kicks off with an unforgettable bass line that is pure funkness incarnate. Maupin’s sax soon joins in, and around the four-minute mark Hancock’s Sun Ra–like synthesizer work enters the mix. The piece continually shapeshifts—true to its name, like a chameleon—moving back and forth between ancient and futuristic worlds. It perfectly embodies the album’s central theme: the fusion of African tradition and modern technology. A2, the re-recorded “Watermelon Man,” features an arrangement by Harvey Mason. Its striking introduction uses the sound of the Hindewhu, an African panpipe (reed flute), recreated here by blowing across the tops of glass bottles. The original melody is slowed down, giving the piece a laid-back, lazy groove quite different from the earlier version.
B1, “Sly,” is said to be a nod to Sly & the Family Stone. It begins in an orthodox jazz-funk style, gradually growing more mysterious as Sly-esque elements creep in. Just past the two-minute mark, the music suddenly shifts into top gear, launching into a relentless drive that continues almost to the very end—a breathtaking progression that still sends shivers down the spine no matter how many times you hear it. The closing track, “Vein Melter,” takes its name from an unclear origin, but musically it’s a mellow piece with an approach reminiscent of Miles Davis. More than that, it feels like a smoldering fire with no major key changes—quiet, restrained, and unsettling. Personally, that slightly unpleasant aftertaste, reminiscent of Takeshi Kitano films or alternative rock, only adds to its status as a true classic.
y the way, the album artwork was created by Victor Moscoso. Herbie’s mask is modeled after a traditional Kple Kple mask of the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire, with the eyes stylized as radio knobs and the mouth rendered as a VU meter (an electronic device that displays audio level), cleverly fusing African tradition with modern technology.
A面2曲は

Standing alongside Zapp, Slave, and Lakeside as one of the defining forces of Ohio funk—indeed, the oldest of them all, having formed in 1959—the Ohio Players began their career in the 1960s as the house band for NYC’s Compass Records.
After releasing singles such as “Trespassin’” and “It’s a Cryin’ Shame,” they signed with Capitol Records, and after a long decade of grinding, finally released their debut album Observations in Time in 1969. Perhaps due to limited commercial success, they left Capitol in ’71 and moved to Detroit’s Westbound Records. There they released four albums—Pain, Pleasure, Ecstasy, and Climax—steadily building their reputation. The minor hit “Funky Worm,” cut from Pleasure, helped boost their profile considerably. By 1974, as their success grew, they transitioned to Mercury. That same year, Capitol—smelling opportunity—reissued Observations in Time with completely new artwork and a title changed simply to the group’s name, making it appear almost like a brand-new release. The record in question is that very reissue.
Soundwise, the album sits loosely in the pocket of gritty late-’60s Northern Soul, but the tracklist is all over the map in a charming way: Allen Toussaint’s “Mother-In-Law,” standards like “Over the Rainbow” and “Summertime,” and more. On paper it may come off a bit scattered, as if they simply packed in whatever they wanted to try at the time, but for us, that’s exactly what makes it valuable. Preferences may vary, but from this shop’s perspective, it’s a fascinating snapshot of where the group’s musical headspace was before their signature “erotic jacket” era—an important archival piece in the Ohio Players story.
1stアルバムが「Observations In Time」。
