Reggae, originating from Jamaica, saw ska dominate the mainstream from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s.
However, a new style emerged around 1966 known as rocksteady. While it translates to "steady" in English, in Jamaican slang it means "to keep on rocking" Alton Ellis’s 1967 hit (Get Ready) Rock Steady became the iconic track that defined this new genre, which thrived until around 1969 when roots rock began to rise.
The lyrics often centered on love and the "rudeboy" culture (the rebellious youth), and as the sound grew sweeter, it paved the way for the lovers rock genre. Lovers rock gained prominence with many female singers emerging from Trojan Records, the UK’s first reggae label, securing its place in reggae history.
During the rocksteady era, groups like The Clarendonians, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, and The Rulers were active, but one group that cannot be forgotten is The Melodians. While traditional Jamaican harmony groups typically followed a trio format, The Melodians stood out with two equally powerful lead singers, Tony Brevett and Brent Dowe, along with Trevor McNaughton providing harmonies. "Sweet Sensation", released during the transitional period in 1969, was produced by Leslie Kong, who also worked with globally successful artists like Desmond Dekker, The Maytals, and The Pioneers at the time. The track reached No. 1 on Jamaican radio stations RJR and JBC upon release (although it struggled to chart in the UK), becoming the signature song for The Melodians. Interestingly, while the reissue version lists a dub version on the flip side, it actually contains Fee Fie Foe Fum by K-Ci & JoJo for some reason!

英語圏では「揺るぎない」ですが、ジャマイカのスラングで「揺らし続ける」の意で、アルトン・エリスが67年に発表した「(Get Ready) Rock Steady」がこの新しいジャンルの象徴的な楽曲としてその名がつけられ、ルーツ・ロックが台頭する1969年くらいまで流行しました。歌詞は恋愛やルードボーイ(いわゆる不良少年)についてが多く、より甘いサウンドになって推し進められ派生したのがラヴァーズ・ロックで、イギリス初のREGGAEレーベルである
トロージャンからは女性シンガーが多く誕生したことにより発展し、ラヴァーズは確固たる地位を築きました。
ロックステディ期に活躍していたのがクラレンドニアンズやジャスティン・ハインズ&ザ・ドミノズ、ルーラーズといったグループで、そして忘れてはならないのが
ザ・メロディアンズ。
ジャマイカの伝統的なハーモニー・グループといえばトリオ編成が基本ですが、2人の同等に力強いリード・シンガーTony Brevett(トニー・ブリヴェット)と
Brent Dowe(ブレン・ダウ)、ハーモニーを歌うTrevor McNaughton(トレヴァー・マクノートン)による編成は前述3組とは一線を画し、本曲「スウィート・センセーション」はシーンの過渡期69年に当時ワールドワイドな成功を収めていたDesmond Dekker(デスモンド・デッカー)やMaytals(メイタルズ)、Pioneers(パイオニアーズ)を手掛けていたレスリー・コングによって制作され、RJRとJBCで初登場1位(辛くもイギリスのチャートでは順位は振るわなかった)を獲得した彼らの代名詞ナンバー！
