John Holt – Carpenter

The original song, If I Were A Carpenter, was composed by Tim Hardin in 1966 and became a hit the same year when sung by Bobby Darin, making it a classic oldies track.

Two years later, in 1968, Ernest Wilson released a cover of the song from Studio One. This cover then became the basis for a “grandchild cover” when John Holt released his own version on a 7-inch record from Jammys in 1989, which was later reissued in 1999.

By the way, “Carpenter” refers to a woodworker, and this song has no connection to The Carpenters or the tribute album of the same name, which featured bands like Shonen Knife and Sonic Youth.

オリジナルは1966年の作曲者Tim Hardinによる「If I Were A Carpenter」で、同年Bobby Darinが歌いヒットしたいわゆるオールディーズの名曲。

2年後の68年にアーネスト・ウィルソンがスタジオ・ワンよりカヴァーをリリース。そのカヴァーをベースに孫カヴァーの形で89年にジョン・ホルトがジャミーズからリリースした7吋の99年リイシュー盤。

ちなみにカーペンターとは大工さんのことで、カーペンターズや同名の少年ナイフやソニック・ユース等が参加したトリビュート盤は一切関係ありません。
