After a promising career as a short-distance runner and Olympic hopeful was cut short by injury, Lieutenant Stitchie transitioned into teaching, and in 1982 began balancing his teaching career with music. He started performing in Spanish Town at City Light Disco and Lightning Disco, sharing the stage with artists like Major Worries and Joe Mannix. His breakthrough came in 1983 when he won a music contest, leading him to join Stereo One and establish himself in the dancehall scene.
By 1986, Stitchie left his teaching job to focus entirely on music, and in 1988, he signed with Atlantic Records, expanding his reach globally. Lieutenant Stitchie became known for his fast-paced and creative lyrical style, avoiding slackness in favor of imaginative and dramatic storytelling, delivered in a complex, melodic, and rapid-fire manner. This unique approach made him one of the most important figures in the dancehall scene of the 80s and 90s.
One of his most famous hits is "Wear Your Size" (1987). A decade later, he teamed up with the talented young singer Lukie D to deliver another masterpiece over the Cat Paw riddim track with this 1997 Jammy's release—a brilliant combination of Stitchie's iconic rapid-fire delivery and Lukie D's smooth, melodic vocals. A must-have gem for dancehall enthusiasts!
