Known as an "out-of-key singer" and a prominent figure during the early dancehall era, Nitty Gritty was especially revered for his performances over digital riddims.
His 1988 Jammys-released original 7" is yet another testament to his talent, featuring his exceptional deejaying over the Real Rock riddim, one of the most iconic riddims of 1988. This foundational tune is a perfect match for Nitty Gritty’s distinctive vocal style, making it a timeless classic!
- Real Rock Riddim -
Original: Soul Vendors – "Real Rock"
The original "Real Rock" instrumental was created by the legendary Studio One session band, Soul Vendors.
The riddim gained widespread recognition through hits like Michigan & Smiley’s "Nice Up The Dance" and Willie Williams’ "Armagideon Time"—the latter even being covered by The Clash. As computerized riddims took over in the mid-1980s, numerous labels jumped on the trend and produced remakes of "Real Rock" Among these were heavyweights like Joe Gibbs, Power House, Jammys, Digital-B, and Stone Love, each contributing to the riddim's enduring legacy with a host of hit songs. "Real Rock" remains a cornerstone of reggae and dancehall history!
