Lily, a half-American, half-Japanese female singer-songwriter, released her second album, "Dulcimer" in 1973, just before her major hit "Watashi wa Naiteimasu".
The album's obi strip reads, "Breaking a silence of one year and two months, this is the second album!! It conveys the honest transformation of a poet changing from a girl to a woman." This is perhaps the first instance of a serious promotional copy for her work.
Although the specifics of how she encountered the dulcimer are unknown, it's likely that she began playing the instrument soon after the release of her debut album, "Onion." According to the company sleeve, she must have been quite fond of the dulcimer.
Without it, her second album might not have come into existence. That said, while the dulcimer might have been the initial inspiration, the album itself moves away from the folk elements of her debut towards a more psychedelic and funky sound. The album was arranged by Kousuke Kida (formerly of The Jacks), with continued involvement from Masami Tsuchiya, Ginji Ito, Ken Yoshida, Nobu Saito, and Akira Inoue, known for their participation in the Bye-Bye Session Band. The performances were supported by Takahiko Ishikawa (formerly of Rokumonsen), Ken Yajima, Kimio Mizutani, Isao Eto, and Orange Pekoe. The album features an array of tracks that explore various genres: A2 "Kyou wa Sora ga Ame de Dekiteru" has an acid folk feel. A3 "Akogare no Famiredo-shi" features distinctly 70s keyboard phrases. A5 "Pipe Love" is a funky rock track reminiscent of a mix between The Beatles' "Come Together" and Jimi Hendrix. A6 "Kokoro ga Itai" has an intro that seems perfect for sampling. B3 "Ringo wo Tabenaide" offers a fast-paced, psychedelic jazz-rock vibe. B5 "Why" which opens with a "Taiyou ni Hoero" style guitar cutting intro, is a staple for psychedelic and garage music fans, and a favorite among DJs. Packed with dope grooves that DJ XXXL would love, this album is a masterpiece recommended not only for DJs seeking groovy Japanese tracks but also for sound creators looking for inspiration.
