Esther Phillips began her singing career in 1950, thanks to the support of Johnny Otis. Despite releasing "And I Love Him" with Atlantic in 1965, commercial success eluded her throughout the 1960s.
However, her fortunes shifted in the 1970s when she joined Creed Taylor's CTI/KUDU label under circumstances that remain unclear. Though known for her vocal prowess, Creed’s strategy to have her sing contemporary hits arranged in a soul/disco style—rather than straightforward jazz standards—proved successful. Following her 1971 release "From A Whisper To A Scream, she continued to release albums annually, including "Alone Again, Naturally" "Black-Eyed Blues" and "Performance" Her 1975 album, "What a Diff’rence a Day Makes" stands out as a landmark in her career.
Arranged for the first time by Joe Beck (as noted by "W/ Beck"), the album features lush horns and strings while also enlisting notable guitarists—Steve Khan on rhythm guitar and Eric Weissberg on steel guitar, in addition to Joe Beck on lead. The album opens with a cover of "One Night Affair" a deep and soulful gem by the O'Jays. The title track, released as a single beforehand, became her first major hit. A3, "Mr. Magic" includes percussion contributions from none other than Ralph MacDonald, who gave his personal seal of approval. On the jazz-funk original tune "Hurtin’ House" (B2), her funky vocals truly shine. The album concludes with a deeply bluesy rendition of the Vogues’ "Turn Around, Look at Me" Though the tracklist is varied, the album maintains a cohesive brilliance throughout. This is considered one of Esther Phillips’ most popular works, but it’s also a must-listen for anyone who tends to stick to rigid categories or leans toward underground tastes. An essential record for all!

W/ Beckとあるように、初めてジョー・ベックがアレンジを担当。演奏面ではホーンやストリングス勢を豊富に投入していますが、ギターもリードを務めるジョー以外にリズムでスティーブ・カーン、スティール・ギターでエリック・ワイズバーグを起用しています。
O'Jaysの楽曲でも1,2を争う渋さの名曲「One Night Affair」カヴァーで幕を開け、先行でシングル・リリースされキャリア初のヒットとなったタイトル曲、ちゃっかりパーカッションで参加している
