Lorez Alexandria – How Will I Remember You?

Japanese release From Broadway To Hollywood made female singer Lorez Alexandria a known name among vocal jazz fans.

Her 1978 album "How Will I Remember You?" marked her first release with Discovery Records. Featuring a few different versions, this album showcases Lorez’s vocal talent, often lauded as one of the 20th century’s most gifted and underrated jazz singers, alongside Gildo Mahones’ rich piano, which together shine in a standout performance. It opens with "Make Someone Happy," from Garson Kanin's 1960 play "Do Re Mi", followed by the contemplative title track, and includes a heartfelt A4 cover of Carole King’s "You Light Up My Life" featuring a playful nod to Blood, Sweat & Tears’ "You’ve Made Me So Very Happy" A poignant highlight, “The Greatest Love of All” (A6), written by Linda Creed during her battle with breast cancer and composed by George Benson (originally sung by him and later popularized by Whitney Houston), stands out as Lorez’s dynamic, nuanced delivery easily rivals Whitney’s powerful rendition. Another gem is “Little Boat” (B5), a bossa nova track where Lorez’s cheerful scat vocals add a special touch. The album’s peak, though, is her version of “Baltimore Oriole” (B3), originally by Hoagy Carmichael, with a rhythmically driven arrangement that almost borders on jazz-funk—a track even featured in a mix by Muro.

This is a must-have not only for vocal jazz fans but for anyone seeking essential jazz artistry.

いくつかのヴァージョンがありますが、"20世紀で最も才能があり過小評価されているジャズ歌手"と言われるロレツの歌唱然り、ギルド・マホネスの豊潤なピアノ等断トツで素晴らしい、ガーソン・ケニン脚本の60年初演戯曲「Do・Re・Mi」のレパートリー「Make Someone Happy」にはじまり、じっくり聴かせるタイトル曲、Blood, Sweat & Tears「You've Made Me So Very Happy」のフレーズも飛び出すA4キャロル・キング「You Light Up My Life」カヴァー、涙なくしては聴けないリンダ・クリード作詞(彼女が乳がんを患い闘病中に書いた), ジョージ・ベンソン作曲で自らが歌うそれがオリジナルで、一般にはホイットニー・ヒューストンの歌唱で知られていますが、声量押しのホイットニーに対し同等の声量に加え、抑揚ある歌唱が当店的にロレツに軍配を上げたいA6「The Greatest Love Of All」, ボッサ調のナイスな楽曲に彼女のスキャットもご機嫌なB5「Little Boat」等素晴らしいですが、白眉を挙げるならばHoagy Carmichaelがオリジナルですが、JAZZ FUNKといってもいいくらいにリズミカルな楽曲アレンジが秀逸で、MUROさんもMIXで取り上げたB3「Baltimore Oriole」でしょう。
