Among the countless masterpieces Stevie Wonder has created (and he’s still going strong), Innervisions from 1973 ranks among his finest and is often considered by some as his best work, right up there with "Talking Book" (although that album didn’t win a Grammy). Alongside the subsequent "Fulfillingness' First Finale", Innervisions completes what is often referred to as Stevie’s trilogy of essential albums.
Debuting in 1962, Stevie reached his sixteenth album with Innervisions—his potential magnum opus. Imagine a comedian in Japan winning an M-1 Grand Prix after 11 years in the business—that analogy only partially conveys his achievement. In pop history, artists at the top for over five decades are rare. While a few musicians have remained active across decades, Stevie Wonder is unique in consistently producing songs that shape music history, with hit after hit spanning generations. If any artist could be considered Stevie’s peer in terms of ongoing influence and contributions to music, it would likely only be The Rolling Stones. Recorded in L.A.’s Record Plant and New York’s Media Sound Studio, Stevie played nearly all the instruments himself on the album, with tracks like “Living for the City” and “Higher Ground” featuring his multi-track recording skills.
The distinctive “Stevie Sound” crafted here, with the help of Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil’s ARP and Moog synthesizer programming, shines through the album. It opens with “Too High” an anti-drug anthem, followed by the politically charged “Visions” with its harsh criticism of hatred. “Living for the City” depicts a young boy born into poverty who, later in life, is sentenced to ten years in prison on drug smuggling charges. In “Jesus Children of America” Stevie addresses religious corruption. The album also includes songs about passionate love, like “Golden Lady,” the poignant “All In Love Is Fair” and the contemplative “Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing” (a favorite referenced by Japanese artist Kenji Ozawa in "Tenki Yomi"). With every track offering something extraordinary, Innervisions is, without a doubt, an album that belongs in every collection.
P.S. Lenny Kravitz reflected on Innervisions in a 1995 interview with Q magazine: "The first time I was struck by Stevie Wonder’s genius was when I was 8 years old. I immersed myself in the production and instruments he created. I could hum every part on this album, from the Fender Rhodes piano to the Minimoog, to the drums. It felt intensely musical, soulful, and spiritual."
Billboard magazine added: "Fundamentally, this album is like a one-man band—yet it works seamlessly. His skills on drums, piano, bass, and synthesizers are extraordinary, and every track operates within a dramatic framework. Each song is his own creation, reflecting a deep interest in portraying serious situations."
