The Hempolics – Life Aint Easy

A so-called revival dancehall band from London made up of hardcore reggae enthusiasts, The Hempolics released this 7” single in 2014! Their tracks always feature some kind of reference or sampling from vintage reggae, and in this work they sample “Little Things,” a gem on the Caltone label and one of the rare recordings by Hemsley Morris — the mentor of Phil Pratt. It’s done with a feeling closer to homage, and in addition to the tasteful choice of source material, the rhyming vocals of the group’s sole female member, Nubiya Brandon, are memorable, perfectly conveying the imagery of the title. A fine tune with great sensibility! On the flip side, the breakbeat mix by Dubmatix is also a winner.

彼らの楽曲は毎回何かしら古いレゲエからの引用/サンプリングを施していますが、本作ではフィル・プラットの師匠でもあるヘムスリー・モリスが残した数少ない作品の中でも貴重なCaltoneレーベルの名曲Hemsley Morris & Phil Pratt「Little Things」をサンプリング。てか、オマージュに近いフィーリングで、渋い選曲もさることながら、紅一点ヌビヤ・ブランドンの韻を踏んだ歌唱も印象的で、タイトルのイメージが伝わるGOODセンスの好曲！
