The third 7-inch single cut from Jump For Joy, the major-label debut album by Osaka’s neo-swingin’ jazz group King Columbia.
The A-side, “Snake Hip,” is a familiar classic among fans of Japanese rare groove and Japanese jazz. The song originally appeared in the go-go club scene of the 1970 cult action film Hakuchū no Shūgeki (Daylight Attack), for which Terumasa Hino handled the music. The original version features hard-hitting drums and plenty of Hino’s trademark trumpet virtuosity, but King Columbia’s take is, as expected, all about the swing. The trumpet leans more toward fun and feel than pure technique (not that they lack chops), and guest guitarist Ryosuke Kinoshita delivers some truly excellent playing. Think of it as the go-go club transformed into a grand cabaret ballroom — that’s the vibe, and it makes this cover a meaningful and worthwhile reinterpretation.
The flip side, “Oshare Ball,” is their own original tune, also featured on their debut single and serving as the album’s title track. Driven by Hammond organ, it carries a vintage feel while still sounding hard-boiled, funky, and cool — a jazz number with serious style. The sleeve design, modeled after the original release, is a nice touch as well.
A面「スネイクヒップ」は和モノブレイクや
和ジャズラヴァーにはお馴染みの名曲、日野皓正が音楽を手がけた1970年公開のカルト・アクション映画「白昼の襲撃」のゴーゴークラブのシーンで流れた曲で、本家はバシバシのドラムにヒノテルのオリジナリティに溢れたトランペット・テクニックがふんだんに盛り込まれていますが、キンコロ(とは略さないか)のそれはずばりと言うかやはりスウィンギン！トランペットもテクニックより楽しさ(彼らが下手と言ってるわけではない)、ゲスト出演している木下良介のギタープレイも実に素晴らしく、差し詰めゴーゴークラブが大箱キャバレーになったとでも言いましょうか。このカヴァーを有意義なものにしています。
フリップの1stシングルにも収録された彼らのオリジナル曲でありアルバム・タイトル曲「おしゃれボール」は、ハモンド・オルガンが効いたヴィンテージ感を漂わせつつもハードボイルドなファンキー&クールJAZZチューン！
オリジナルを模したジャケット・ワークもナイスでス。
