Recorded in New York in May 1977, May Dance was Terumasa Hino’s first album after moving to the Flying Disk label, during his third year living in the United States.
The session features a powerhouse quartet with Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and John Scofield — key figures who helped define the Miles Davis groups — and all six tracks are original compositions written by Hino himself.
The album kicks off with “Wind Blows Your Skin,” which opens with a serious, almost CTI-like atmosphere before unfolding into a fiery performance. That intensity carries into A2, “The Wild Lady,” where a freaky approach pushes the music beyond wild. On B1, “Free Land,” Scofield’s guitar work stands out on a deeply cool, gritty tune. Altogether, this record is widely regarded as one of the crown jewels of Hino’s 1970s output — a true world-standard jazz album.
