Michael Henderson—often mentioned alongside Bob Babbitt and James Jamerson, the musician who influenced him the most—as one of the three greatest bassists in Motown history. He performed on early electric Miles Davis live albums such as Live-Evil, Agharta, and Pangaea, and collaborated with legends including Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, the Dramatics, and Dr. John. Discovered by Norman Connors as a vocalist, he made his solo debut in 1976 with Solid on Buddah Records. His 1980 release Wide Receiver became a B-boy anthem, and his bass riffs on Norman Connors’ “Valentine Love” and “You Are My Starship” were sampled by artists like Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J. His vocals have also been sampled on Jay-Z’s American Gangster and in Eminem’s 8 Mile, among others, and covered by various artists. In 1986, for reasons unknown, he suddenly retired. Deeply respected by hip-hop artists as well, Michael reportedly passed away today at the age of 81. The album chosen in his memory is his third solo release from 1978, In the Night-Time, recorded at Sigma Sound Studios with Henderson himself handling production and songwriting. The single “Take Me I’m Yours,” a mellow and sensual mid-tempo duet with fellow Detroit singer Lanna Scott, reached No. 3 on the R&B chart and was later sampled by L.E.G.A.C.Y. on “Son of Sam.” The album also features nine tracks in total, including “Happy,” which prominently showcases Randall Jacobs’ Johnny “Guitar” Watson-like guitar work; the rock-leaning “Yours Truly, Indiscreetly,” also penned by Randall; and “Whisper In My Ear,” written by drummer Jerry Jones and imbued with a Free Soul vibe.
