Formed in 1977 in Buffalo, the northernmost city in New York State, Spyro Gyra have released more than 20 albums to date and sold over 10 million records, making them one of the most successful fusion bands of all time. Today marks the birthday of their central figure and saxophonist, Jay Beckenstein.
The album picked here is their third overall release, the 1980 original album Catching the Sun, issued as their second release for MCA following the massive success of Morning Dance.
Produced by the aforementioned Beckenstein and Richard Calandra, the record features a carefully selected lineup of musicians depending on the track, including John Tropea, Hiram Bullock, Randy Brecker, and others, each perfectly suited to their roles. Highlights include the title track—showcasing Chet Catallo and Randy’s distinctive use of the Harmon mute, with standout solos—along with A2 “Cookatoo,” the beautifully mellow and later-sampled A3 “Autumn Of Our Love,” the moderately funky B1 “Percolator” with its striking oriental-flavored intro, and the pleasantly rhythmic B3 “Lovin’ You (Interlude)/Lovin’ You,” driven by crisp guitar cutting. Altogether, the album is packed from start to finish with accessible, memorable tracks that make for an immensely enjoyable listen.
