Consisting of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and the group’s sole female member Annie Ross, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross stand at the very pinnacle of vocalese trios. Among their discography, the 1959 release “The Swingers!” is widely regarded as a top-three masterpiece.
On the musician side, the album features Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone. The record opens with Sonny Rollins’ hard-bop classic “Airegin,” a tune firmly etched into jazz history. Not only is the performance more swinging than the original thanks to its bold arrangement, but this single track alone makes it clear just how exceptional and utterly unique LHR were as a vocal group.
The rest of the program is equally outstanding, both vocally and instrumentally: Miles Davis’ “Four” on side B1, Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time”—also well known as part of Eddie Jefferson’s repertoire—and “Where” on B3, featuring a solo vocal by Jon Hendricks. An absolutely breathtaking set of ten flawless tracks.
