Japan's pride and joy, guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka, released his third album "An Insatiable High" in 1977.
The lineup of musicians is incredibly luxurious, featuring Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, Chuck Rainey, Patrice Rushen, Abraham Laboriel, Paulinho da Costa, and the world-renowned Tower of Power brass section. From Japan, illustrious members such as Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, Jun Fukamachi, and Shigeo Hamaguchi also participated. All tracks on the album are composed and arranged by Takanaka himself.
Starting with "Sexy Dance" a familiar and pleasing fusion AOR reminiscent of Tappan Zee productions, the album showcases Takanaka's eloquent guitar, which seems to sing through a percussion break, leading into the superb solos of the title track with its mid-song modulation. The vocal-featured track "E.S.P." (B1) and the mellow tune "Sundrops" (B3) opening with a solid drum break, each highlight the exceptional performances of the stellar musicians. This album stands as the definitive Takanaka work, crafted with the best songs performed by the best musicians delivering their best performances. The jacket artwork is somewhat ambiguous in its intent, but this does not detract from the musical excellence contained within.
