Bob James ‎– One (ボブ・ジェームス ‎– はげ山の一夜)

This is the 1976 Japanese release of Bob James' legendary solo debut album "One" originally released in 1974, which, like his second album "Two" released the following year, is renowned as a treasure trove of sampling sources!

The participating musicians include Grover Washington Jr. (ss), Richie Resnicoff (g), Gary King (b), Steve Gadd, Idris Muhammad (ds), Jon Faddis, Lew Soloff (tp, flh), Ralph MacDonald (perc), Dave Friedman (vib), Hugh McCracken (harm), and others.

Similar to Hubert Laws' "The Rite of Spring" and Deodato's "Prelude" this album features CTI's specialty: adaptations of classical pieces. It includes A2 "In The Garden" based on Pachelbel's "Canon" and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" Especially noteworthy is "Night on Bald Mountain" which incorporates several distinctive phrases, yet Bob's electric piano performance is entirely original. By the second half of the piece, it hardly resembles the original at all—he fully assimilates the composition, making it his own in a manner reminiscent of Hip-Hop. The brilliance of his music, combined with his style and attitude, is why his works are widely sampled by many artists and have had such a significant influence. Naturally, the album also includes original tunes by Bob. The opening track "Valley Of The Shadows" is impressive, as is A3 "Soulero" which was sampled in Soulkast feat. Das EFX and Brahi's "We Live Hip-Hop (No Doubt)." And of course, there's the iconic B3 "Nautilus" sampled in over 370 tracks.

The cover of B2 "Woman Of The World" (originally "Aijou No Namida"), which likely influenced Ayako Hosokawa's version, is also superb!

ヒューバート・ロウズ「春の祭典」やデオダート「プレリュード」同様、CTIお得意のクラシック曲をアダプテッドした楽曲を収録。パッヘルベル「カノン」ベースのA2「In The Garden」とロシアの作曲家ムソルグスキー「はげ山の一夜」で、特に「はげ山～」はいくつかの特徴的なフレーズが演奏されていますが、ボブのエレピが完全にオリジナル。曲半ば以降はほぼ原曲のイメージはなくw曲を取り込み自分のものにする様はまさにHIP HOP。彼の作品が多くのアーティストにサンプリングされるのは楽曲の素晴らしさ然り、そのスタイルやアティテュードが受け入れられ且つ影響を与えているのだと思います。

もちろんボブのペンによるオリジナル・チューンで、冒頭「Valley Of The Shadows」や Soulkast feat. Das EFX and Brahi「We Live Hip-Hop (No Doubt)」で使われたA3「Soulero」, 370曲以上でサンプリングされているB3「ノーチラス」もナイス。

細川綾子さんヴァージョンにも影響を与えているであろうB2「愛のためいき」カヴァーも絶品でス！
