Curtis Mayfield ‎– Heartbeat

Today, in remembrance of this legend, I’m picking out this record: Curtis Mayfield’s 1979 release Heartbeat, his first album on the RSO label. The production was handled by Mayfield himself along with a lineup of Philly heavyweights: Theodore “Dutch” Robinson of the Ohio Players, Norman Harris and Ronald Tyson of the Salsoul Orchestra, and Bunny Sigler of Instant Funk—all of whom also contributed as songwriters. The album kicks off with a funky disco number penned by the Salsoul duo Harris & Tyson, marked by flashy strings and especially notable for its bassline intro—famously sampled by Tatsuro Yamashita for “BOMBER.” Then comes A2, written by Bunny Sigler & Theodore Robinson, slowing down the pitch with spacey synth effects and a moody arrangement. On the B-side, there’s B3, co-written by Curtis (with Gil Askey), which remains a popular sampling source. With a lineup and content like this, there’s no way it could miss—an essential Curtis Mayfield album.

プロデュースは自身と、オハイオ・プレイヤーズのダッチ・ロビンソンことセオドア・ロビンソン、サルソウル・オーケストラのノーマン・ハリスとロナルド・タイソン、インスタント・ファンクのバニー・シグラーといったフィリー勢が務め、曲も書いてます。
冒頭「Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like To Be Loved)」はノーマン・ハリス&ロナルド・タイソンのサルソウル・コンビによる、派手目なストリングスもらしい、達郎さんが「BOMBER」でイントロのベースラインをモロにサンプリングしていることでも知る人ぞ知るファンキーDISCOチューン。バニー・シグラー&セオドア・ロビンソン作で、ピッチを落としピュンピュンマシンと渋めのアレンジのA2「What Is My Woman For?」, カーティス(とジル・アスキー)のライティングで、サンプリングソースとしても人気のB3「You're So Good To Me」等、内容が悪いわけがない必須カーティス盤でス。
