This album, proudly featuring the "Swing Journal Selection Gold Disc" sticker on the cover, is the second pressing released in 1973 of Nabesada’s (Sadao Watanabe’s) debut album, originally issued by King Records in 1961. Nabesada, who has been active since the early 1950s and is known for spreading Bossa Nova in Japan, released this album under his own name, as the title suggests. The musicians include Kazuo Yashiro on piano, Masanaga Harada on bass, Takeshi Inomata and Akihiro Hasegawa on drums, and Akira Nakano on trumpet, forming a quintet. Instead of Cannonball Adderley Quintet's iconic track "Work Song" they boldly chose to open with the stylish Sam Jones composition "Del Sasser" from the 1960 masterpiece album “Them Dirty Blues” released in 1960. Track A2, "Romanade" penned by Yashiro, bursts with dandyism, perfectly fitting the mood. As an alto saxophonist, it was inevitable that Charlie Parker’s "Now’s The Time" would be included, alongside the original composition B2 "M & M" written for his wife and beloved daughter. The album closes with "My Elegy" composed by Toshiko Akiyoshi (then credited as Toshiko Mariano, mother of Monday Michiru). With their own compositions skillfully woven in, and other well-curated selections, this album shines as a classic Japanese modern jazz masterpiece!
