This album, "Ms. Jones to You" was released in 1976 by South Carolina-born singer Etta Jones as her first record on the Muse label. Despite its striking cover featuring what could be described as a "sassy Osaka auntie" vibe (cue the "Nandesunon?" attitude), which might irk some at first glance, the music itself is nothing short of excellent.
This album remains unreissued to this day. From the opening track, famously sung by Billie Holiday, Etta unleashes her "auntie power," delivering a gritty, raw version that pairs perfectly with the album’s scrappy charm, just like the mood the cover suggests. What truly stands out, however, is the stellar lineup of musicians: Muse regular Buster Williams on bass, Grady Tate on drums, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Walter Davis on piano. Adding to this, the producer is none other than tenor saxophonist Houston Person.
This is undoubtedly a feelin’ good! classic—one that our pal H likely spun back in the day. It’s a brilliant, underappreciated gem of a record.
