On this day in 2011, singer Takako Ueno from Yokohama passed away at the age of 75 due to multiple myeloma. We offer our condolences and take a moment to reflect on her remarkable journey.
Takako began her professional singing career at the age of 19 at the Yokohama Seaside Club, performing in U.S. military clubs under the mentorship of Joe Matsutani, who also taught Nancy Umeki, Tamaki Sawa, and Minami Barley. In 1972, she traveled to the U.S., where she sang with Stan Kenton’s group and received guidance from legends like Dakota Staton and Betty Carter.
Upon her return to Japan, her voice captivated pianist Mitsuaki Kanno, who introduced her to Hiroshi Isaka, the founder of Camerata Tokyo. Equally impressed, Isaka decided to produce her debut album. Initially planned as a vocal performance with a piano trio, the final recording featured only Kanno’s piano accompaniment, allowing Takako’s vocals to take center stage.
Her vocal approach was restrained rather than full-throated, offering a subtle, thoughtful interpretation of the jazz standards she chose. Many of these songs revolved around themes of heartbreak and longing, underscoring how much of the jazz canon is built on tales of love gone wrong or broken relationships. Listening to these tracks, one can’t help but notice the “bitterness” “astringency” and “tang” of the music—qualities reminiscent of a strong cup of coffee.
Songs about love that’s “going well” rarely make it into jazz standards, and rightly so, in my opinion. Writing and performing about blissful, uncomplicated love often feels too trivial. Jazz, with its focus on the intricacies and hardships of human emotion, offers a completely opposite perspective compared to modern songs that primarily aim for relatability.
