Chicago-born tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin began his career around 1945, performing with the orchestra of Lionel Hampton, and went on to collaborate with such giants as Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey. On this day in 2008, he passed away from a heart attack at the age of 80.
In remembrance, today’s selection is the second pressing of Blues for Harvey, originally released in 1973 on SteepleChase Records in Denmark and later reissued by Inner City Records in the U.S.
From A1 “That Party Upstairs” through B2, the title track, the album features Griffin’s own original compositions, and it closes with a cover of Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning.”
