Detroit-born guitarist Earl Klugh, who was discovered by Dave Grusin and joined the legendary band Return to Forever, collaborated with Bob James on their second album together, "Two of a Kind"
Released in 1982 by Capitol Records, which is Earl Klugh's label, the album retains the Tappan Zee mark on the back cover and inside, highlighting the collaborative spirit. The title and cover art, which suggest a sequel, align with Tappan Zee's meticulous work. Interestingly, the previous collaboration, "One On One" (1979), was credited as Bob James & Earl Klugh.
The change in this album's presentation might reflect a mutual decision to emphasize their equal partnership. The sound of "Two of a Kind" doesn’t differ significantly from their first collaboration, but this time, the strings featured in the previous album have been omitted. Instead of feeling lacking, this change highlights the duo's instrumental interplay. The album consists entirely of original compositions by the two artists, except for A2 "Whiplash" which was composed by Harvey Mason, who also plays drums on this track. Compared to the warm and gentle atmosphere of their previous work, this album presents a more varied and nuanced tone, evoking a sense of saudade. If their previous work was a musical embodiment of spring, this album feels like autumn.

ジャケット・ワークや2枚目ということを意識してのことであろうタイトル等、如何にもタッパン・ジー作品の仕事ですが、今回はアール・クルーの所属レーベルであるキャピトルより1982年にリリース(ジャケ裏と内側にはしっかりタッパン・ジーのマークあり) 細かいことをいうと、前作の「One On One」('79)は
Bob James & Earl Klugh表記。どちらの意思なのか、話し合ってなのかはわかりませんが、おそらく対等にやろう(やっている)という配慮からなのでしょう。
そのサウンドは前作と大きくは変わりませんが、本作では前回フィーチャーしていたストリングスを廃除。でも、物足りなさを感じるとかではなく、むしろ二人の奏でる音色が際立った感じに。前作に引き続き二人のライティングによるオリジナル・ナンバー(A2「Whiplash」のみドラムで参加している
ハーヴィー・メイソン作曲)で構成され、その雰囲気はほのぼのとした前作と比べ、曲調に起伏があり、サウダージ感漂うとでもいいましょうか。季節で例えるならば前作が春なのに対し、本作は秋といった感じでス。
