George Benson & Joe Farrell ‎– Benson & Farrell

“Benson & Farrell,” the 1976 release that paired George Benson and Joe Farrell. The rather uncharacteristic jacket design—unlike what you’d usually expect from CTI—might raise some doubts (lol), but aside from the closing standard, the tracks are all original numbers written by the album’s arranger, David Matthews. Contrary to the lighthearted vibe suggested by the cover, the music delivers a refined yet gritty and powerful fusion sound. From our shop’s perspective, the highlight is the closing track “Old Devil Moon,” with its exquisite Latin arrangement. And of course, the recording was done by Rudy Van Gelder!

およそCTIらしからぬ、何とも言えないジャケット・ワークに不安は募る一方ですがw収録曲はスタンダードであるラスト以外は本作アレンジャーであるデヴィッド・マシューズのペンによるオリジナル・ナンバー。その軽いノリのジャケットとは裏腹に、洗練されつつも渋く太いフュージョン・サウンドを演ってます。

当店的には絶妙なLATINアレンジのラスト「Old Devil Moon」がオススメ。録音はもちろんヴァン・ゲルダーでス！
