Philadelphia-born Dexter Wansel is a multi-talented keyboardist, singer-songwriter, and producer.

Early ’70s: Member of Yellow Sunshine, one of the first Philly groups to blend rock and soul. Late ’70s: A key player in MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother), the legendary studio band at Sigma Sound Studios, responsible for the lush strings & horns on this very album. Producer/Songwriter: Worked with Patti LaBelle (If Only You Knew – a No.1 hit on the Soul Chart), The Jones Girls, The Jacksons, Lou Rawls, and more. Philly International Records: Helped shape the label’s iconic sound alongside Gamble & Huff. Somehow, amidst all this, he found time to release his solo debut album, Life On Mars (1976). Produced & arranged by Wansel himself Instrumental support from Instant Funk (another Philly-based band) Backing vocals by The Sweethearts (Carla Benson, Barbara Ingram, Evette Benton)

Track Highlights:A1: "A Prophet Named K.G."– A high-speed, thrilling, instrumental track that showcases each musician’s solo brilliance. Sampled in DJ Shadow’s In/Flux. A2: "Life On Mars" – A spacey take on The Blackbyrds’ Rock Creek Park. Featured on David Mancuso’s LOFT CLASSICS Vol.1. A3: "Together Once Again" – A beautiful ballad featuring Terri Wells on vocals (credited as Terry Welles on the jacket), penned by Vinnie Barrett instead of Wansel. A4:"Stargazer" – Even more fast-paced than the album opener, with stunning string arrangements by Jack Faith.

B1: "One Million Miles From The Ground" – A gorgeous vocal performance by Wansel, later sampled in Panacea’s Orange Penicillin. B2: "You Can Be What You Wanna Be" – Another showcase for Instant Funk, with a strong groove. B3: "Theme From The Planets" – The album’s crown jewel, featured in Ultimate Breaks & Beats (Vol.10) and one of the most beloved sampling sources ever. B4: "Rings Of Saturn" – A mysterious yet sensual closing track with a floating, otherworldly vibe. Sampled in Dela feat. Talib Kweli’s Long Life, Lil B’s Chasing the Rain, and Action Bronson & RiFF RaFF’s Bird on a Wire.

Ultimate Breaks & Beatsクラシック収録盤。デクスター・ワンゼルはフィラデルフィア出身のキーボーディスト兼シンガーソングライター。70年代初頭は当時のフィリーでは珍しかったROCKとソウルを融合したサウンドを打ち出していたYellow Sunshineのメンバーとして、70年代後期にはシグマ・サウンドスタジオで演奏していたスタジオ・ミュージシャンにより結成されたMFSB(Mother Father Sister Brother)を牽引、ちなみに彼らは本作のストリングス&ホーンで参加しています。

更にはSOULチャート最高1位をマークしたPatti Labelle「If Only You Knew」をはじめ、Jones Girl, The Jacksons, ルー・ロウルズ等への楽曲提供、そして本作のリリース元フィラデルフィア・インターナショナルのサウンド面を盟友ギャンブル&ハフと共に支えたハウス・プロデューサーでもあります。

そんな忙しい彼が合い間を縫って?76年にリリースしたソロデビューアルバムが本作「ライフ・オン・マーズ」
自身によるプローデュース&アレンジで、演奏面では同郷バンドのインスタント・ファンクの面々が、ヴォーカル&コーラス等は同じくフィリーのフィメール・ヴォーカルトリオ、The Sweethearts(Carla BensonとIngramのメンバーだったBarbara Ingram, Evette Benton)が担当。

冒頭「A Prophet Named K.G.」はノン・ヴォーカルだからこそスピード感とスリルを伴ったダイナミックなサウンドで、各プレイヤーのソロが波のようにインパクトを与えていくこちらはDJ Shadow「In/Flux」で使われています。A2タイトル曲とB2「You Can Be What You Wanna Be」は前述インスタント・ファンクによるパフォーマンスで、A2は以前紹介したThe Blackbyrds「Rock Creek Park」をスペイシーにした印象で、デヴィッド・マンキューソのLOFT CLASSICS(vol.1)収録ナンバー。A3「Together Once Again」はジャケのクレジットではTerry Wellesとなっていますが、City LimitsのTerri Wellesのキュートなヴォーカルをフィーチャーしたバラードで、この曲のみデクスターでなくVinnie Barrettによるライティング。A4「Stargazer」は冒頭曲の疾走感を2割増しさせ且つストリングスを効果的にあしらった好曲で、アレンジはジャック・フェイスが務めています。

B1「One Million Miles From The Ground」, B2「You Can Be What You Wanna Be」はデクスターの美ヴォイスが堪能できるナンバーで、B1はPanacea「Orange Penicillin」ネタ。そしてキラーチューンしかない本作の本命であろうB3「Theme From The Planets」は、Ultimate Breaks & Beats(vol.10)に収録されており、且つブッチギリ人気のサンプリングソース。ラスト「Rings Of Saturn」はもはや神秘的な雰囲気ながらセクシーさも兼ね備えた遊泳感たっぷりのサウンドで昇天。こちらはDela feat. Talib Kweli「Long Life」, Lil B「Chasing the Rain」, Action Bronson & RiFF RaFF「Bird on a Wire」でサンプリングされています。グレート！
