Washington State–born bassist David Friesen, also known for his collaborations with Hōzan Yamamoto and Masahiko Satoh, released his second album Waterfall Rainbow in 1977.
Friesen joined Joe Henderson’s group in 1974, followed by a stint with Billy Harper’s quintet in 1975. From 1976 onward, he relocated to New York, where he began working closely with longtime associates such as John Stowell. That same year, he released his first album as a leader, Star Dance, on the Inner City label, just like this record. That debut featured Steve Gadd on drums, along with Paul McCandless on English horn and oboe, and showcased a highly original, fusion-oriented sound. While that album is excellent in its own right, Waterfall Rainbow stands out for its title track in particular, which is, in my view, truly exceptional.
