Born in California in 1925, pianist and composer Marty Paich (also known as Marty Pike) passed away on this day in 1995 at the age of 70. After spending time in Shorty Rogers’s band in the 1950s, he formed his own group and became a central figure on the West Coast jazz scene. In remembrance of him, today I’d like to highlight this album.
When it comes to Paich, most people immediately think of the famous “bath-tub jacket” album released in 1959—but this record shares the same title. Yes, this is the 1981 reissue on Discovery, and while many of us—probably 10 out of 10—might wish they had kept the original cover design, the music itself is absolutely solid. From “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” to “Love for Sale,” “Moanin’,” and other ironclad standards, the performances here are just as ironclad. And no wonder—look at the lineup: Art Pepper, Jack Sheldon, Victor Feldman, and a roster of other top-tier musicians, all under the baton of Maestro Paich himself. Since original pressings are quite expensive, I highly recommend this more affordable reissue for anyone who doesn’t already own it. And lastly—may he rest in peace.

彼と申しますと、59年リリースの「お風呂ジャケット」アルバムが有名と存じますが本作も同名タイトル。そう、こちらは81年にディスカバリーより再発されたレコードで、ジャケ・デザインはまんまが良かったなと思うのは10人中10人でございましょうがw「スウィングしなけりゃ意味がない」をはじめ、「Love For Sale」、「Moanin'」等の鉄板スタンダード・ナンバーが鉄板の演奏で聴ける本作。それもそのはずでして、ミュージシャンはアート・ペッパー、ジャック・シェルドン、
ヴィクター・フェルドマン等、錚々たる方々が参加。それにペイチ先生のタクトでございます。オリジナルはお高い故、お持ちでない方は是非リーズナブルなこちらをオススメ致します。そして、合掌。
