Brian Auger, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of so-called jazz-rock, teamed up with actress-turned-singer Julie Driscoll on what is effectively Auger’s debut album, Open.
A self-taught keyboardist, Auger began his professional career in 1963 as a jazz pianist. He was later influenced by Jimmy Smith, which led him to take up the Hammond organ. In 1964, he formed the quartet Trinity with Vic Briggs (guitar), Ricky Brown (bass), and Mick Waller (drums). The following year, he launched Steampacket, a band featuring Julie Driscoll and Rod Stewart. For this album, the rhythm section had changed: Dave Ambrose handled bass duties, while Clive Thacker—who would later play with Nucleus—took over on drums.
As for the music itself, most of the tracks are original compositions written by Auger. The opener, A1, is a mod-styled cover of “In And Out” by Wes Montgomery (John L. Montgomery), while B1 is a mod reinterpretation of “Tramp,” written by James McCracklin and Lowell Fulson and made famous by Otis Redding & Carla Thomas. This track was later sampled in P.M. Dawn’s “Fantasia’s Confidential Ghetto: 1999 / Once In A Lifetime / Coconut.”

ニュークリアスでも活動することとなるクリブ・サッカーに替わっています。
