Chicago-born pianist Jack Wilson released "Innovations" on the Los Angeles-based Discovery label in 1977.
To briefly summarize his career, he made his debut in 1963 with "The Jack Wilson Quartet featuring Roy Ayers" which prominently featured the renowned vibraphonist Roy Ayers. He continued to release albums throughout the 1960s and signed with Blue Note in 1966, leaving behind three albums. However, after "Song for My Daughter" in 1969, he disappeared from the scene. He resurfaced unexpectedly in 1977 with this album (though he released "Autumn Sunset" on the same label that year, which likely has almost identical content, possibly just a title change). Regardless, the content of this album can be summed up in one word: great! Side A consists entirely of Jack's compositions. The opening track, the aforementioned "Autumn Sunset" is excellent, but the standout for our shop is A2, "Kunta Kinte"
On Side B, the only original composition by Jack is the blues tune "Baby Blue" (B1). B2 is a cover of Ornette Coleman's "Tears Inside" B3 is a cover of Bronisław Kaper's "Invitation" and the album concludes with a cover of David Rose's "Our Waltz" All of these performances are superb.

BLUE NOTEと契約し、3枚のアルバムを残すも「Song for My Daughter」('69)より文字通り音沙汰がなくなります。そんな中突如77年に発表したのが本作(同年に「Autumn Sunset」を同レーベルよりリリースしていますが、収録内容もほぼ同じでおそらくタイトルを変えただけ)
それは兎も角本作の内容ですが、結論から言うとグレート！の一言で、A面は全てジャックによるライティング。冒頭の前述「Autumn Sunset」も秀逸ですが、当店的にはA2「Kinta Kunte」が白眉と存じます。
