Black Heat ‎– No Time To Burn

Black Heat released their debut album in 1972. This work followed as their second, and with “Keep On Runnin’” in 1975 as their last, the band disbanded. Their activity spanned only four years, yet all three albums they left behind are nothing short of masterpieces—true rare groove both in sound and spirit. The opening title track was composed by guitarist Bradley Owens, keyboardist Johnell Gray, and bassist Naamon Jones. It’s an Afro-influenced funk number reminiscent of Fela Kuti, sampled on Dassen 3’s Waratteru Baai Ja Naiyo. Track A2, Beast of Burden, was written by Bradley. The flute, drums, and percussion in the break section are so brilliant they alone could serve up five bowls of rice. A3, Check It All Out, was written by Bill Patterson and Leroy Butler, and sampled on Płomień 81’s Lawstory. A4, Love The Life You Live—the famous line also known as a Bob Marley quote—was composed by Gene Redd Jr. and Kool & The Gang, and later used in DJ Spinna’s Rock.

Side B opens with Super Cool, written by Bradley and Naamon, featuring “wah-wah” chorus and Bradley’s guitar in the spotlight. B2, M & M’s, takes things up a notch with freaky sax and an explosive percussion break that’s nothing short of killer. Tracks B3, B4, and B5 were written by ex-The Unifics’ Al Johnson. B4, Rapid Fire, is an LB Nation classic, famously sampled by Tokyo No.1 Soul Set in Jive My Revolver, Scha Dara Parr in 5th Wheel 2 the Coach, and also by Joi Campbell in Everyting—all fresh in memory.

1972年に1stアルバムをリリース。続いて2ndにあたる本作、そして75年「Keep On Runnin'」を最後にバンドは解散。活動期間にして4年、残したアルバム3枚全てが超傑作と、サウンド然り、レアグルーブを地でいくグループであろうブラック・ヒート。
本作の冒頭タイトル曲はバンドのギタリストであるブランディ・オーウェンズとキーボーディストのジョンネル・グレイ、ベースのナーモン・ジョーンズの作曲。フェラ・クティ的なアフロ・インフルンスド・ファンク・ナンバーで、Dassen 3「笑ってる場合ですよ」にてサンプリングされています。A2「Beast Of Burden」はブランディのライティング。特にブレイク部のフルート、ドラム&パーカッションはご飯5杯はいただける秀逸さと存じます。A3「Check It All Out」はBill Patterson, Leroy Butler作でPłomień 81「Lawstory」ネタ。Gene Redd Jr.とKool & The Gangによる、ボブ・マーリーの名言でも知られた文句のA4「Love The Life You Live」はDj Spinna「Rock」で使われています。

"ワウワウ"コーラスとブランディのギターを大々的にフィーチャーしたブランディ&ナーモン作のB1「Super Cool」、後半のフリーキーなサックスと超絶パーカッションによるブレイクも強烈にカッコイイB2「M & M's」、B3, 4, 5はex. The Unificsのアル・ジョンソンのライティングで、B4「Rapid Fire」はLBネイション・クラシックス。Tokyo No.1 Soul Set「Jive My Revolver」、スチャダラパー「5th Wheel 2 the Coach」で、Joi Campbell「Everyting」で起用されたのも記憶に新しいところでございます。
