McCoy Tyner ‎– Focal Point (マッコイ・タイナー ‎– フォーカル・ポイント)

McCoy Tyner, a pianist from Pennsylvania, was born in 1938 and today is his birthday.

In 1960, he joined John Coltrane's band, supporting Coltrane alongside Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. Tyner participated in numerous works, including the iconic "A Love Supreme" ('65). In 1962, he joined Impulse Records, and in 1967, he moved to Blue Note. In 1971, he formed a regular quartet with Sonny Fortune, Calvin Hill, and Alphonzo Mouzon and signed with Milestone Records in the same year.

This album, "Focal Point" released in 1976, is Tyner’s tenth work with Milestone. Interestingly, none of the aforementioned Fortune, Hill, or Mouzon are featured on this record. In fact, each recording Tyner made with Milestone had different members. For "Focal Point" the lineup includes Charles Fambrough on bass, who was part of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and later Pharaoh Sanders’ quartet, and who sadly passed away last New Year's Day (our sincere condolences). Eric Gravatt, formerly of Weather Report, is on drums. Guilherme Franco, known for his work with Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes, is on congas, and Gary Bartz, among others, plays saxophone. Regarding the sound of this album, it can be described as a fusion of modal spiritual jazz and rare groove sensibilities. Personally, I believe Gary Bartz's presence significantly influences the character of this work. Though the record is relatively affordable, it carries a potential worth about three times its price!

60年にコルトレーンのバンドに加入し、ジミー・ギャリソンやエルビン・ジョーンズと共にトレーンを支え、「至上の愛」('65)をはじめ数多くの作品に参加。62年にインパルス、67年にBLUE NOTEに籍を置き、71年にソニー・フォーチュン、カルヴィン・ヒル、アルフォンゾ・ムザーンを従えたレギュラーのカルテットを編成し、同年マイルストーン・レコードに移籍します。本作はそのマイルストーンでの記念すべき10作目にあたる、76年リリース作「フォーカル・ポイント」
本作のバンドのメンバーですが、前述のフォーチュン、カルヴィン、アルフォンゾの誰一人として参加してません。ていうか、マイルストーンでの録音は毎回メンバーが変わっています。

今回の面子はベースにアート・ブレイキー& Jazz Messengersに在籍経験があり、後年はファラオのカルテットに在籍していたものの昨年の元旦に亡くなった(謹んでお悔やみ申し上げます)チャールズ・ファンブロー、ドラムは元ウェザー・リポートのエリック・グラヴァット、コンガにはLonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoesに参加していたギルヘルム・フランソ、サックスではゲイリー・バーツ等が参加。
気になるサウンドですが、一口で言うなればモーダルなスピリチュアルJAZZとレアグルーヴ的センスの融合とでもいいましょうか。個人的にはゲイリー・バーツの存在が作品に大きな影響を与えていると存じます。

比較的リーズナブルなレコードですが、プライスの3倍くらいのポテンシャルを持つ一枚でス！
