Jack McDuff, an organ player from Illinois, was instrumental in launching the careers of artists like Grant Green and George Benson. He released his debut album "Tough 'Duff" on the Prestige label and continued to be prolific throughout the 1970s with albums released on labels such as BLUE NOTE and Cadet. This brings us to his 1974 release on Cadet, "The Fourth Dimension"
The recording features Grady Tate on drums and percussion, and guitarists Joe Beck and Jimmy Ponder among others. Except for A4 "Half Breed" and B2 "All Is Fair In Love" the album consists of original compositions by McDuff. A2 "Rolling Stone" was written by Oliver Sain. A4, written by Al Capps and Mary Dean, is a cover of Cher's 1973 Billboard No. 1 hit "Half Breed" and it's the only track on the album with vocals, performed by Jean Dushon, who we mentioned in a previous blog post. B2 is a selection from Stevie Wonder's classic album "Innervisions" showcasing a bluesy and stylish arrangement of "All Is Fair In Love" Overall, the album has a funky vibe but avoids being overwhelmingly heavy, much like the "kossari" style of ramen from Ten-Ichi (a term I was puzzled by when I first heard a senior ordering it at the restaurant). The sound is both stylish and cool. From our perspective, the highlights of this album are the title track, A3, which is the fastest tune on the record, and B1 "The City Bump" which prominently features Pee Wee Ellis on flute and was also selected for our SOULMEETING compilation.
The album's cover art is also suitably sophisticated, making this a genuinely intriguing record.

全般的にファンキーですがドス黒い印象ではなく、天一(ラーメン)でいう"こっさり"みたいな感じで(初めて先輩がお店で注文しているのを聞いた時"何言ってんだ"と思いましたがｗ)スタイリッシュ且つクールなサウンド。
当店的に本盤のハイライトを挙げるならば盤イチ高速チューンのA3タイトル曲、当方が
SOULMEETINGコンピでチョイスした、ピー・ウィー・エリスのフルートを大々的にフィーチャーしたB1「The City Bump」でしょうか。
