This album is fully produced by Yuji Ohno, a legendary sound creator who frequently appears on this blog and continues to impress.
Sônia Rosa, originally from São Paulo, Brazil, began teaching herself guitar at the age of six and debuted as a bossa nova singer in her teens in her home country. Around 1967–69, during Japan’s unprecedented bossa nova boom (spearheaded by Sadao Watanabe), she moved to Japan, reportedly through a connection with Lisa Ono’s father, who ran a club in São Paulo. Rosa made her re-debut in 1970 with "Sensitive Sound of Sonia Rosa" under Watanabe’s support and continued to sing with his band for a while. At live performances, when Watanabe wasn’t available, Yuji Ohno would sometimes fill in on piano. The two hit it off, eventually collaborating on this album.
The opening track, "Te Quero Tanto" composed by Yuji Ohno, is instantly recognizable from its intro. It’s a ballad featuring the brilliant interplay of Tsunehide Matsuki’s electric guitar and Hidetoshi Nakumura’s nylon-string guitar. The Portuguese lyrics are written entirely by Rosa. Another standout is A2, "Natsu no Image" (lyrics by Machiko Ryu, music by Yuji Ohno), a track highlighted in Tatsuo Sunaga’s mixes. A3, "Fim De Semana" is written and composed by Rosa herself. Her playful “pup-pup” scatting adds to the upbeat weekend vibe, making it a delightful and personal favorite. A4, "Last Samba" a slow samba composed by Yuji Ohno, showcases his trademark beautiful string arrangements, complemented by Nakumura’s unmatched nylon-string guitar work. The piece is rounded off perfectly with Shin Kazuhara’s trumpet. A5, "Charlie, My Darling" features the Ryu-Ohno pairing again, with Rosa’s deeply tender vocals making it one of my top favorites on the album. The flow continues into A6, "Tudo E Voca," another Rosa original. While the song starts as a dreamy ballad, it shifts into an exhilarating uptempo climax, with Rosa singing the title phrase in a spine-tingling moment of brilliance.
Interestingly, the Portuguese lyrics are not translated in the liner notes. Instead, the album provides English subtitles to preserve the subtle nuance of Rosa’s expression, allowing listeners to engage their imaginations.
Side B opens with "Sei Jao Queimou" another Rosa composition, reaffirming her talent as a remarkable melody maker. B2, "Tokyo In The Blue" by the Ryu-Ohno duo, has a nostalgic barroom feel, yet Rosa’s vocals imbue it with a strange, irresistible charm. B3, "Ressalva (Melancholy)" features Rosa’s tickling, intimate delivery of "Voce" (you), which feels both teasing and irresistible. For someone like me, her voice could send me into a trance. B4, "Tao So (Always Alone)" with lyrics by Rosa and music by Ohno, is as tender as a lullaby, but just when you’re about to drift off, the track surprises with a sudden burst of musical-style strings. B5, "Socorro Taro! (Help Me, Taro!)" co-written by Rosa and Ohno, is a lively finale featuring Rosa’s son Taro, much like Himiko Kikuchi’s "What’s Baby Singin’" Finally, the album closes with a reprise of "Te Quero Tanto" performed with only acoustic guitar, doubling the emotional impact.
There is truly no bossa nova album anywhere in the world as meticulously crafted and captivating as this one. A masterpiece of global standards and undoubtedly one of the finest records ever made.

ソニア・ローザは
ブラジルのサンパウロ出身で6歳よりギターを独学で覚え、10代でボサノヴァ歌手として自国でデビュー。折りしも、地元サンパウロでクラブを経営していた小野リサの実父との接触をきっかけに、日本へ渡ります。当時67～69年頃は我が国空前のボサノヴァ・ブームで、そのブームの立役者が言わずと知れた
ナベサダですが、氏のバックアップを受け「Sensitive Sound of Sonia Rosa」('70)で再デビュー。その後も暫くは氏のバンドで歌っていたようで、ライブハウスでナベサダが休みのときにピアノを弾いていたのが大野雄二。二人は意気投合し、本作を制作するに至ります。
初っ端「Te Quero Tanto (I Love You, So)」の一聴それとわかるイントロは大野雄二の作曲。
松木恒秀のエレキと
中牟礼貞則のガット・ギターのコンビネーションも素晴らしいバラードで、ポルトガル語による詞は全て彼女によるもの。須永辰雄氏の
MIXに取り上げられた、竜真知子作詞、大野雄二作曲のA2「夏のイマージュ」。A3「Fim De Semana (Weekend)」は詞・曲とも彼女。「プップ」スキャットもおっちゃんにはたまりまへん。聴いていてウキウキ(死語)する、楽しい週末感と彼女らしさに溢れた好曲と存じます。大野雄二作曲によるスロー・サンバのA4「Last Samba」は、氏ならではの美しいストリングス・アレンジと、ナイロン弦でボッサ、サンバ調の曲を弾かせたら右に出る者はいないであろう中牟礼のギターが印象的で、最後に聴こえる数原晋のトランペットまで実に行き届いてます。A5「Charlie, My Darling」の作詞曲はA2のコンビ。トコトンしっとり歌う彼女の声は、本作でも1, 2を争う当方のお気に入り曲でございます。その流れからのA6「Tudo E Voca (All Of You)」は再び彼女によるライティングで、いよいようっとり夢心地かと思いきや、ラストは一転アップテンポになり彼女がタイトルを歌う件は鳥肌物のカッコ良さ。因みにポルトガル詞の訳詞は掲載されておらず、彼女の表現と微妙にニュアンスが変わることをおそれ、英語でつけられたサブ・タイトルでイメージしながら本作を楽しんでほしいとの配慮によるものです。
B1「Sei Jao Queimou (Black Beans)」も彼女の作。改めて彼女はメロディ・メーカーとしても非常に優れたアーティストと存じます。B2「Tokyo In The Blue」は三度目の竜・大野ペアによる場末のスナック仕様チューンw。でも彼女のヴォーカルだと不思議な魅力があります。擽ったい&気色良い彼女のヴォーカルで"Voce"(あなた)と言われると、おっちゃんは居ても立ってもいられなくなりそうなB3「Ressalva (Melancholy)」。そんな当方を寝かしつけようとするが如く、まるで子守唄のような優しさのB4「Tao So (Always Alone)」は彼女の詞、大野雄二作曲。いよいようとうとした頃に突如ミュージカル風のストリングスが流れる、気の許せない曲。B5「Socorro Taro! (Help Me, Taro!)」は彼女と大野雄二による、
菊池ひみこ「What's Baby singin'」よろしく彼女の実子であるタロー君も登場の正に本作の集大成。ラストはアコギ一本による切なさ倍増のA1リプライズで、もう素晴らし過ぎます！
本作ほど一音も気の抜けない、聴くほどに引き込まれるボッサ・アルバムは世界広しといえどそうございません。完全にワールド・スタンダードであり、その中でも屈指のレコードと存じます。
