Alongside Masaru Imada, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto was one of the key figures at Three Blind Mice (TBM), leaving behind an impressive eleven leader albums. This live album captures the legendary concert performance by the Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio at Tokyo Yamaha Hall during the historic event “5 Days in Jazz.”
Of the six tracks included, the only original composition is B2, which was also released in 1976 under the title “Blues” on Isao Suzuki’s Black Orpheus. A1 is a 1944 composition by the Johnny Burke–Jimmy Van Heusen team, a tune also known for Björk’s later cover version. Here, however, it’s delivered as a brisk, swinging performance that makes for a perfect opener—an ideal way to grab the audience at the start of 5 Days in Jazz. A2 is a ballad composed by Tadd Dameron, and on this recording the trio presents it with playing that is at times delicate, at times dynamic, yet consistently elegant. A3 is, needless to say, one of Yamamoto’s trademark numbers—so much so that one might jokingly ask, “Do you really like this tune that much?!” The title track, which needs no explanation, places a strong spotlight on Ohyama’s bass. From pizzicato to bowing to unison passages, he fully unleashes the entire range of his expressive arsenal. The aforementioned B2 combines a relaxed atmosphere with a strong sense of drive, making it both a great tune and a great performance. The closing number is a Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields composition, originally sung by the god of tap dance himself, Fred Astaire, in the 1936 film Swing Time. The evening reaches its absolute peak here—a brilliant performance perfectly suited to the end of a live set, and, in my view, the crowning highlight of this album.

鈴木勲「黒いオルフェ」に「Blues」として収録されているB2のみ。A1「Like Someone In Love」はJonny Burke, Jimmy Van Hausenコンビの44年作、
ビョークがカヴァーしたことでも知られるナンバーですが、ここでは軽快且つスウィンギンな好演奏で、「5 Days in Jazz」のオープニングとしての掴みはOK。A2「If You Could See Me Now」はタッド・ダメロン作曲のバラード・ナンバーですが、本作では時に繊細に、時にダイナミックに且つ優雅な演奏を聴かせてくれます。A3は言わずと知れた、"そんなに好きか?!"ってくらい氏の定番ナンバー。
これまた説明不要のタイトル曲ですが、ここでは大由のベースを大々的にフィーチャー。爪弾き、弓弾き、オーラル・ユニゾンと持てるものをフルに発揮しています。前述のB2はリラックスした雰囲気ながらもドライブの効いた名曲&名演。ラストはJerome Kern, Dorothy Fields作、36年の映画「スウィング・タイム(有頂天時代)」で主演を務めたタップダンスの神様、
フレッド・アステアの歌唱がオリジナルの「The Way You Look Tonight」
