Isao Suzuki and Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, who previously collaborated on "Black Orpheus" released by TBM in 1976, deliver another stunning performance together in "Samba Club"

The album opens with a cover of Michel Colombier's "Overture" famously known for Jaco Pastorius's collaboration, which completely surpasses the original! "Tenderly" (A2), included in a compilation of Japanese jazz supervised by Wax Poetics Japan, is one of the best versions among many.

A notable feature of this album is Tsuyoshi Yamamoto's spinet playing, paired with a rhythm section that keeps a lively tempo in the delightful "Sweet Georgia Brown" (B1). The English folk tune "Greensleeves" (B2), familiar as a phone hold tune, was apparently performed impromptu in the studio, showcasing Isao Suzuki's skills with both the wood and piccolo bass. The final medley of the chanson classic "La Vie En Rose" and "Moonglow" is simply superb! This album, which could easily be listed among the top 100 Japanese jazz albums, has never been reissued.

鈴木勲と山本剛は1976年にTBMより発表された「黒いオルフェ」で共演していますが、本作「サンバ・クラブ」でも息の合った名演を聴かせてくれます。

アルバム冒頭のMichel Colombier作でJaco Pastoriusとの共演でも知られる「Overture」のカヴァーは、完全にオリジナル超え！Wax Poetics Japan監修による和ジャズのコンピに収録されたA2「テンダリー」は数多あるヴァージョンの中でも屈指と存知ます。
本作の特徴の一つである山本剛のスピネット再び、リズム隊もテンポ良く実に痛快なB1「Sweet Georgia Brown」、イングランドの古謡で電話の保留音などでお馴染みのB2「Greensleeves」は、スタジオにて即興で演じられたらしく鈴木勲の独壇場。ウッドとピッコロ・ベースを披露しています。

ラストのシャンソン名曲「La Vie En Rose」～「Moonglow」のメドレーも実に素晴らしい！

そんな和ジャズ100選の一枚と言っても過言ではない本作は未再発です。
