Thanks to the reissue of Ryo Fukui’s trio album “Scenery,” the TRIO-affiliated label Nadja has suddenly gained wider recognition—but to get straight to the point, this album is every bit as great as Scenery: a top-tier masterpiece of Japanese jazz. Although the players here are not Fukui’s regular trio, they perform with a unity and tightness that feels as if they had been playing together for years. The album is composed entirely of cover tunes. It opens with “Good Morning Heartache” (written by Irene Higginbotham, Ervin Drake, and Dan Fisher), originally sung—definitively so—by Billie Holiday. While Holiday’s version feels inseparable from her very identity, this rendition is strikingly swinging and sophisticated. Track A2 is the highlight of the album: a bossa-arranged “Autumn Leaves” by the so-called “King of Autumn Leaves,” arguably his finest performance of the tune, and in my opinion one of the greatest versions of “Autumn Leaves” ever recorded, even on a global scale. Side B opens with the title track “Days of Wine and Roses” (music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Johnny Mercer). Mercer, of course, is the same lyricist who wrote the English lyrics for “Autumn Leaves,” originally a French chanson—making this sequencing a tasteful, intentional connection. The album closes with the theme song from the film of the same name, composed by Luiz Bonfá. Here, Japan’s greatest bassist Isao Suzuki absolutely commands the performance, delivering an arrangement and execution that rivals—even surpasses—the earlier “Autumn Leaves.” Shinji Mori’s drumming and Yoichi Ogawa’s congas add just the right touch, resulting in a performance that is nothing short of magnificent.
The Days of Wine and Rose Written by Henry Mancini, Johnny MercerThe days of wine and roses
Laugh and run away like a child at play
Through the meadowland toward a closing door
A door marked “Nevermore” that wasn’t there before
The lonely night discloses
Just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you
