Today is Booker T.'s birthday, born in 1944. At 16, he joined Satellite Records (the predecessor to STAX) as a professional saxophonist. In 1962, he met guitarist Steve Cropper, also a Satellite employee, and together they formed the M.G.'s. Booker switched to organ and, as STAX's house band, they backed artists like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke while also producing their own music. This album is the soundtrack to "Up Tight", a 1969 film written and directed by Jules Dassin that centers on the civil rights movement and the fight against racial inequality. It’s filled with the classic, bluesy, and gritty sound of the M.G.'s, with Booker T.'s vocal on the opening track setting the perfect tone. The mellow but serious organ blending with percussion in "Cleveland Now" (A2), the sample-worthy track "Children, Don't Get Weary" (A3), used in Raekwon's "Glaciers of Ice" and the single hit "Time Is Tight" are just a few highlights in this fantastic collection.
