Talking Heads' fourth album, "Remain in Light" is a groundbreaking new wave masterpiece.
Produced by Brian Eno, who is also known for his work on the seminal compilation "No New York" from 1978, this album stands out as a significant work in the band’s discography. Although "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts," a collaborative album between Eno and the band’s key member David Byrne, was intended as its companion piece, copyright issues resulted in "Remain in Light" being released first, even though it was recorded later.
The album boldly incorporates the concepts and methodologies of African music into the band’s ensemble, creating a revolutionary sound. The composition and recording processes heavily emphasized improvisation, avoiding traditional rock chord changes entirely. This meant that melodies and lyrics were almost completely undeveloped at the start, relying solely on the vibe and atmosphere of the improvisational sessions. コンピ「NO NEW YORK」を手掛けたことでも知られるブライアン・イーノ。本作は本来イーノとバンドのキーマンであるデビッド・バーン「My Life in The Bush of Ghosts」の姉妹作にあたり、著作権の問題で発表順が逆になってしまったものの、制作に関しては本作の方が後に録音されています。
アフリカ音楽の概念に基づいた発想及び方法論を大胆にバンド・アンサンブルに持ち込んだ革命的なサウンド。作曲と録音方法はインプロビゼーション(即興性)が非常に重要視されたもので、既存の
ロックのようなコード・チェンジを一切すること無く制作。つまりメロディーラインや詞はほぼ白紙の状態、ノリと雰囲気だけの即興演奏、全ての曲が一つのコードだけで出来ているのです。しかも、既存の演奏パターンを打ち破る試みとしてメンバーが担当の楽器を離れ、曲によって色んな楽器を演奏するという手法をとり、それにより出来上がったバックトラックは多種多様な楽器によるポリリズム(複合リズム)を生み出し、エキサイティングかつスリリング。オリジナリティに溢れたサウンドになっておるわけです。
音楽の好き嫌いは別としても、これからも様々なリスナーに衝撃を与え続けるであろうグレートなアルバムと存じます。
