Not every record in existence can boast both great cover art and content. This album, which shouldn't be judged by its cover, unfortunately falls into the category of having a disappointing cover but surprisingly great content. Incidentally, I don't plan to introduce records that have excellent covers but mediocre content anytime soon, lol.
So, what defines a bad cover? One common pattern is "album covers featuring the artist's photograph." All the records I've introduced so far that shouldn't be judged by their covers feature the artists' photos on the jackets. Because of their appearance, these records haven't received the attention they deserve. I intend to continue digging for these hidden gems and bringing them to light.
Dave Grusin, known for his numerous soundtracks, released this album as his second work under his name, following "Discovered Again!" ('76). With the exception of A2 "Playera" and B3 "Catavento," the tracks are all original compositions by Grusin. He showcases his versatility by playing piano, synthesizer, and percussion. The lineup of participating musicians is impressive, featuring Steve Gadd, Ron Carter, Ralph MacDonald, Grover Washington Jr., and others. Highlights include a sophisticated arrangement of the classical piece by Spanish pianist Enrique Granados on A2 and a refreshingly delightful cover of Milton Nascimento's "Catavento" on B3. There's also B1 "Modaji" a mellow fusion track popular as a sampling source with a Bob James vibe, and B2 "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter" a self-cover of the main theme from the 1968 movie of the same name (originally credited to David Grusin). Notably, this album has an alternate cover that was released as a reissue by GRP in 1984. The record I'm presenting here is the original US pressing.
