Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio – Red Gardenia (山本剛トリオ – レッド・ガーデニア)

Released in 1978, Red Gardenia is a trio recording by Tsuyoshi Yamamoto with Toshifumi Kawabata (bass) and Keishi Kishida (drums).

One of the notable features of this album is something relatively rare in Yamamoto’s catalog: it opens with Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” and closes the record with “Too Shy to Say.” Naturally, the standards are given their proper treatment as well. Highlights include A3 “Satin Doll,” B1 “Lover Come Back to Me”—famously performed by Erroll Garner—and B2 “S’Wonderful,” arranged in Yamamoto’s signature bossa style, along with the original title track. Across its program, the album delivers a series of poised, beautifully swinging performances full of refinement and taste.

本作の特徴として、山本剛作品では比較的珍しいスティーヴィー「Isn't She Lovely」を初っ端に、作品の最後を「Too Shy To Say」で締めている点でしょう。

もちろんスタンダードもしっかり演っていて、A3「Satin Doll」やエロール・ガーナーの名演で知られたB1「Lover Come Back To Me」, 氏ならではのボッサアレンジによるB2「S'Wonderful」に、オリジナル・チューンのタイトル曲等、端正でスウィング感溢れる素晴らしい全7曲を収録！

Jon Lucien – Mind's Eye

Blending ’70s soul with Brazilian sounds, and blessed with an Afro-Caribbean baritone voice and uniquely expressive scat, Jon Lucien stands as a truly one-of-a-kind artist. His 1974 third album Mind’s Eye is widely regarded as a masterpiece on par with his second album Rashida.

Produced once again by Larry Rosen, the album features returning collaborator Dave Grusin, along with guitarist John Tropea. On percussion, Uruguayan legend Osvaldo Fattoruso (of OPA) and Ralph MacDonald lend their support.

The album opens with “A Sunny Day,” later covered in 2015 by Cecilia Stalin and Khari Cabral Simmons. Other highlights include the balearic-tinged, folky A3 “Adoration,” which begins with beautiful guitar arpeggios and subtle synthesizer textures; and the club/rare groove classic A5 “Listen Love,” later covered by UFO and sampled in “Listen Luv” by Stephane A. and “Thinking of You” by Patr00 feat. Caucasian. On side B, “World Of Joy” evokes the image of a deep sea untouched by light, featuring lush strings, while B3 “Ghetto Song” delivers a gritty drum break, horn arrangements reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield, and powerfully funky, soulful vocals. It may go without saying at this point, but this truly remains a magnificent and timeless masterpiece.
